The Crisis of ISIS: A Prophetic Prediction | Sermon by Hamza Yusuf

Syrian Hadra: Jala' Al-Qulub

Mahmoud Darwish - The Eternity of Cactus (بد الصبار)

? Where are you taking me, father–
... Where the wind takes us, my son –

As the two were leaving the plain where...
Bonaparte’s soldiers surveyed
–the shadows on the old wall of Acre
a father said to his son: Don’t be afraid. Don’t
be afraid of the drone of bullets! Stay close
to the ground so you’ll survive! We’ll survive and climb
a mountain in the north and return when
the soldiers return to their distant families

? Who will live in the house after us, father –
! It will remain as it is, as it has always been, my son –

He felt for his key the way he would feel for
his limbs and was reassured. He said
:as they climbed through a fence of thorns
Remember, my son, here the British crucified
your father on the thorns of a cactus for two nights
and he didn’t confess. You will grow up,
my son, and tell those who inherit their guns
the story of the blood upon the iron…

? Why did you leave the horse alone –
To keep the house company, my son –
...Houses die when their inhabitants are gone

Eternity opens its gates from a distance
to the traffic on night. The wolves of the wilderness
howl at a frightened moon. And a father
!says to his son: Be strong like your grandfather
,Climb with me the last hill of oaks
my son, and remember! Here the janissary fell
from the mule of war. So be steadfast with me
and we’ll return

? When, father –
! Tomorrow. Perhaps in two days, my son –

A reckless tomorrow chewed at the wind
behind them through the long nights of winter
The soldiers of Yeshua ben Nun built
their citadel from the stones of their house. Out of breath
on the path to Qana: Here
Jesus passed one day. Here
he turned water into wine and said
many things about love. My son, remember
tomorrow. Remember crusader citadels
gnawed at by April weeds after

...the soldiers’ departure

Mahmoud Darwish - This sea is mine

This sea is mine. This fresh air is mine.

This sidewalk, my steps and my sperm on the sidewalk are mine.
The old bus station is mine.
Mine is the ghost and the haunted one.
The copper pots, The Throne Verse, and the key are mine.
The door, the guards and the bell are mine.
The hors hoe that flew over the walls is mine.
Mine is all that was mine.
The pages torn from the New Testament are mine.
The salt of my tears on the wall of my house is mine.
And my name, though I mispronounce it in five flat letters, is also mine.
This name is my friend’s name, wherever he may be, and also mine.
Mine is the temporal body, present, and absent.
Two meters of earth are enough for now.
A meter and seventy-five centimetres are enough for me.
The rest is for a chaos of brilliant flowers to slowly soak up my body.
What was mine: my yesterday.
What will be mine: the distant tomorrow,
and the return of the wandering soul as if nothing had happened.
And as if nothing had happened:
a slight cut in the arm of the absurd present.
History mocks its victims and its heroes.
It glances at them in passing and goes on.
The sea is mine. The fresh air is mine.
And my name, thought i mispronounce it over the coffin, is mine.
As for me, filled with every reason to leave,
I am not mine.
I am not mine.
I am not mine.

Mahmoud Darwish - The Dice Player (لاعب النرد)
